SIREN TO SILENCE
Memories of the Great Hanshin Earthquake
This work is a photo book that contains the aftermath of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, an unprecedented disaster that occurred in January 1995. I went to the site immediately after the earthquake, walked around Kobe City and Nishinomiya City, and continued to cover the area carefully afterwards. The photos in this book are all heavy and intense, but they are different from news photos and have a unique tone that is mysteriously quiet.

"SIREN TO SILENCE" Memories of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, by Umino Kosei
The Great Hanshin Earthquake left many dead and huge scars. Despite this, the passage of time is cruel, and it is true that it is trying to be buried in people's memories.
This book is a photo book that vividly records the great earthquake. The tragically collapsed houses, the elevated roads turned to rubble, the expressions of the survivors. The monochrome photographs speak eloquently in the imagination and stir memories. January 17, 1995, was not the "end" but the "beginning."

A photo documentary that captures with a tranquil gaze the city and life destroyed by the Great Hanshin Earthquake that occurred on January 17, 1995. The nightmarish scenery is contrasted by a sense of calm and power of rebirth.
